Commissioned Project Showing Large Format Billboard Works: GUBB, WHIPPS, BESWICK & PYE. |
BRITISH ART SHOW 8 ASSOCIATE PROGRAMME. ACE & CULTURE SOUTHAMPTON FUNDED | SOUTHAMPTON UK.
2016-17
UGO Project Space was a rolling programme of large format public artworks, which utilised underused billboards to present a series of individual, critical contemporary work by Southampton-based and nationally renowned artists. The project space presented an interesting platform for the artists to consider the purpose, context and outcome, generating new pieces specifically for the framework, but very much embedded in their ongoing practice. UGO was part of the British Art Show 8 Associate Programme in Southampton and was generously supported by Arts Council England, Southampton Cultural Development Trust, University of Southampton and Southampton City Council.

The subjects for S. Mark Gubb work are drawn from the social and political culture he grew up in; an equal fascination with things he finds so great and so terrible about the world we live in. This work forms part of a bigger project, ‘Revelations’ which took place at SYSON Gallery, g39 Gallery and multiple public sites, including the same work being displayed at i70 Sign Show [Missouri. US.].

Stuart Whipps is an artist based in Birmingham. In taking an artifact or historic position as the starting point for his work, the artist questions the role of documentation in constructing a shared understanding of cultural values. Poor Old Tax Payer [1979] is a collage of newspapers, all of which contain political cartoons, that reference British Layland. Resting on these newspapers are parts from a Austin A Series engine from a 1979 Mini. With the help of ex-workers from Longbridge the home of British Layland and Austin, the artist is restoring this Mini. Simultaneously, Whipps was also exhibiting the partially restored Mini at the John Hansard Gallery as part of the British Art Show 8 across 2016-17.
